Knowledge, Language & Curriculum is a core paper in B.Ed. (Second Year) Curriculum prescribed by Chaudhary Charan Singh University (CCSU), Meerut. We will discuss the rationale of giving place this subject in B.Ed. Curriculum. In this subject there are three major areas to be studied-

1.Knowledge

2.Language

3.Curriculum.

Knowledge part is basically related to Epistemology. A teacher should be familiar with the nature and types of Knowledge. It will help a teacher in effective daily Lesson Planning. If a teacher has the proper understanding of Sources of Knowledge and ways of Knowledge Generation, then it can help the teacher to achieve the knowledge from a valid source and also can motivate the teacher to contribute in knowledge generation process.

Language Proficiency; especially reading and writing skill are essential competencies for a teacher so that a teacher can communicate and share his/her knowledge in verbal and written form effectively. If a teacher is a good READER then he will surely be able to update his knowledge domain on regular basis. Also if teacher is familiar with the types of reading and mechanism of developing effective reading skills then he will be able to develop effective reading skills in his students. Similarly; if a teacher has the ability of analyzing his students written responses, then he can identify his students’ problems regarding the subject-specific concept understanding. In other words, teacher will be able to diagnose the difficulties faced by his students in concept building and then on this basis he can find the possible reasons and can plan remedial teaching accordingly.

A teacher should also have the understanding of types of Curriculum and Curriculum Development process and models. If a teacher has the knowledge of different types of Curriculum then he can organize the learning experiences as per the nature and objectives of Curriculum. Similarly if a teacher knows about the Curriculum Development process and its different models then he can play an important and significant role in Curriculum Development whether on State level, National Level or International Level.

Now the question arises what is the relation between these three areas i.e.

1.Knowledge

2.Language

3.Curriculum.

In other words how these three areas are associated with each other. We can explain the relationship between these three areas in this way: When Valid Knowledge either achieved or generated, it becomes essential to share it with others in effective written manner and to understand this written knowledge properly, Reading Competency plays a major role and this knowledge can be shared widely only if it becomes the part of a Curriculum. In this way we can say; Knowledge, Language and Curriculum these three areas are closely interlinked to each other and are important for each teacher irrespective of their subjects and levels (whether School level or Higher Education level).
