In today’s scenario, we often come across the term- Soft skill. Therefore, in order to understand this term in a better way, we will discuss the introduction and the importance of Soft skills in our day to day life.

What are Soft Skills?

Soft skills are a combination of people skills, social skills, communication skills, attitudes, career attribute, social intelligence, and emotional intelligence quotients among others that enable people to navigate their environment, work well with others, perform well, and achieve their goals with complementing hard skills. The Collins English Dictionary defines the term “soft skills” as “desirable qualities for certain forms of employment that do not depend on acquired knowledge: they include common sense, the ability to deal with people, and a positive flexible attitude”.

 

Job market competition is increasing day by day. Many surveys show that the students who are graduating from different institutions and universities are not employable or not getting a job. In today’s scenario in the higher education especially the technical education needs to be integrated with the finishing school concept of imparting employable skills, more on soft skills which will improve the employability rate of the students. In other words, the employability skills a job and also to perform the job and imply positive outcomes for the individuals as well as for the organization they are working for.

 

Soft skills are important for both personal and professional development of our lives. Each of us knows about listening, reading and writing modules of the traditional English. We know what and when to talk, but soft skill improves how to speak which is a necessity for everyone’s life. In personal life, soft skill makes every relation healthy and in professional life soft skill makes every organization healthy and wealthy. To get a job and keep that job we need a combination of technical skills and soft skills. Earlier, people who had a brilliant academic record with added work experience were well sought after by most of the corporate world. But now, hard skills and work experience is not enough for excelling in the corporate world. Companies are hiring those people who are technically strong and possess soft skill. Nowadays many management colleges have started to incorporate soft skill training in the curriculum of Management/IT courses.

So from the above notion, we conclude that soft skill plays a major role along with technical/hard skills in each and everyone’s life. In order to secure a respectable position in the corporate world, the universities are incorporating these soft skills in the students during their course which will help them to improve their overall personality and employability skills.
