New Delhi: In the new National Education Policy 2020, approved by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday (July 29), the curriculum and educational structure of school education is undergoing a profound change to meet the developmental needs and interests of school children for their all-round development at different Phase.

NEP 2020 will emphasize childhood care and education. This will replace the 10 + 2 structure of the school curriculum by 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 curriculum structure as per the age of 3-8, 8-11, 11-14 and 14-18 respectively. The 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 structure will include a 12-year school and three Anganwadi or pre-school. The 5 + 3 + 3 + 4 structure will comprise a basic phase from 3 to 8, pre-primary education of 8 to 11 years, an initial stage of 11 to 14, while the secondary phase will include 14 to 18 years.

According to NEP 2020, school students will only take exams for classes 3, 5, and 8. In other years, assessment will change to a “regular and formal” style that promotes learning and development testing more “merit-based” Will happen. “Higher-order skills, such as critical analysis, critical  thinking, and conceptual learning”.

NEP also proposed that board exams be held for classes 10 and 12, but these would be redesigned with “overall development”.

According to the HRD ministry statement, “It will bring a 3-6 year high-altitude open age group under the school curriculum, which has been globally recognized as an important stage for the development of a child’s mental faculties.” The new system will have three years of Anganwadi / Pre-schooling along with 12 years of schooling. “A National Curriculum and Educational Framework for Early Childhood Care and Education (NCPFECCE) for children up to the age of eight will be developed by the National Council for Education Research and Training (NCERT).

The Ministry of Human Resource Development, Women and Child Development (WCD), Health and Family Welfare (HFW) and Tribal Affairs will jointly complete the planning and implementation of ECEC

Highlights

The new policy aims at universalization of education from pre-school to secondary level with 100% GER in school education by 2030. “New 2020 policy is the first education policy of the 21st century and replaces the 34-year National Policy on Education (NPE), 1986. It is aligned on the foundational pillars of access, equity, quality, affordability and accountability. The policy aligns. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the aim is to transform school and college education into a vibrant knowledge society and global knowledge superpower by providing both holistic, flexible,  learning and unique abilities of each student suited to 21st century needs and aimed at bringing out the unique capabilities of each student,”
